😞 OSTEOARTHRITIS (OA) 😞
Osteoarthritis affects the vast majority of people, particularly as they get older. Most people will have osteoarthritis and not even know about it! But the unfortunate few can be severely affected by it. Osteoarthritis is the result of age related changes where the joint space becomes narrower and the joint isn’t quite as smooth as what it once was. This can then sometimes result in pain and reduced movement in a particular joint. It can affect any area of your bodies many joints including your hip, knee, shoulder or even the small joint of your spine.
What can we do for you if you have OA related pain?
The first thing I often tell people is we can’t change the osteoarthritic joint changes as these are natural aged related alterations in the joint surfaces. However, as I stated before, a lot of people have OA and don’t even know it! So if we can treat the area and settle the irritation and at the same time get you to strengthen the muscles around the joint in the right way, or do some flexibility exercises, then this can significantly reduce the pain or even enable you to be pain free! With OA it is important to seek a physiotherapist’s advice as the exercise and treatment programme need to be at the correct level for you, otherwise you run the risk making the pain worse if you push it too hard, or see little benefit if you are not pushing it hard enough at home.
