Sports massage is a form of massage involving the manipulation of soft tissue to benefit a person engaged in physical activity.
Soft tissue is connective tissue that includes skin, muscles, ligaments and fascia (a form of connective tissue that lines and ensheaths other soft tissues). Sports massage is designed to assist in correcting problems and imbalances in soft tissue that are caused from repetitive and strenuous physical activity and trauma.
Benefits of Sports Massage
The application of a sports massage (prior to and after exercise) may enhance performance, aid recovery and prevent injury. The build up of the ‘waste products’ of exercise within the muscles can often cause pain. Massage increases the circulation allowing the body to process and remove these chemicals more rapidly and reduce the discomfort. The heat generated within the muscles from a massage can help to reduce any tightness and spasm experienced with the muscles as a result of exercise.
