Bradley Physio can help to rapidly relieve the symptoms of Vertigo or BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) by performing The Epley Manoeuvre and providing the Brandt-Daroff exercise programme for you to follow at home. Most patients notice a significant improvement in their symptoms within 1-2 treatments.
Causes
Condition explained
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common causes of vertigo. This type of vertigo is often triggered by certain head movements which can result in brief periods of dizziness, nausea, sickness, loss of balance or even vomiting. This happens as a result of dislodged crystals in the utricle within the inner ear. So when a patient with BPPV moves their head, the crystals also move, confusing the ear’s balance sensors and causing the sensation of dizziness and vertigo.
Diagnosis
Our assessment process
Following a thorough discussion about your symptoms your physiotherapist will perform an assessment of your head and neck including a series of tests to confirm you are suffering with BPPV, note its severity and rule out any other possible causes. We may also use a technique called the Dix-Hallpike Manoeuvre to confirm the cause of your vertigo is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. No invasive procedures or tests are required for diagnosis at this stage.
Expert Treatment
Multiple approaches
There are 2 main treatments for BPPV and at Bradley Physio we often combine both.
- The Epley Manoeuvre can be performed by your therapist and is an extremely effective method of restoring the normal function of the inner ear and often resolves the symptoms of vertigo in one session.
- Brandt-Daroff Home Exercise Programme – A sequence of exercises to help return the dislodged crystals to their normal location within the inner ear.
